When you lack space in the living room, figuring out how to organize your furniture can be tricky. While seating is the priority, there are also tables and lounging surfaces to consider, not to mention lockers. The challenge is how to include all the essentials without making the room feel overcrowded.

Our living rooms have also become much more multifunctional in recent years, with many of us now working from home and needing a home office.
By rethinking the layout and reworking the furniture arrangement, we’re going to show that it shouldn’t be that difficult to make the most of the potential of any compact living room.
How to organize furniture
While the classic three-piece set always has its place, if living room space is tight, rethinking the traditional sofa setup and a pair of matching armchairs could be the solution.

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to placing furniture in a small space can be dealing with the television. Find the right place for the electronics so it doesn’t dominate the room.
“I always start with the main pieces of furniture — the sofa and the chairs,” says Lisa Mitchell, design director at Interior Style Studio. “My usual tantrum is designing a layout around the TV. I like to imagine how the furniture arrangement will best induce conversation, reading, or enjoying the view.”
A shelving and cabinet unit that spans an entire living room wall will provide stacks of storage and free up more space than having multiple individual pieces scattered around the room.

Integrated storage is the solution according to Simon Tcherniak, senior designer at Neville Johnson. “Built-in TV storage units can be individually designed to meet storage needs and fit perfectly into the space needed,” he says.
“But the main benefit of opting for smart TV storage is that it maximizes space for larger items within the room, like sofas and coffee tables.”
Here are 10 tips on how to make the most of every corner of your living room:

Follow a trick that designers often use and instead of pushing the furniture in the room against the walls, let it ‘float’ in the center of the room. Even if it’s just a few inches, moving the sofa and chairs away from the walls helps create breathing space, which will make a small room feel bigger.

Make full use of every inch to maximize your living room layout. Don’t let alcoves, recesses or any nooks and crannies go to waste, instead find ways to utilize the space and create built-in storage or seating.

One of the easiest ways to make a small room layout look more balanced is to opt for a symmetrical layout with two sofas (or a sofa and two armchairs) positioned facing each other.

A large rug can be a useful device when it comes to organizing and anchoring the seating layout in a small living room, especially if you have a furniture collection that feels a little mismatched.

Opt for bespoke designs and leaner-looking pieces that are more proportionate to the size of the room, like low-back sofas with sleek, slim armrests or even compact armless designs.

Arrange the furniture and seating in a way that showcases your living room’s best features or architectural details, such as an impressive fireplace, panoramic window, or any original decorative details worth showing off.

One of the easiest ways to make a small living room more spacious is to avoid overcrowding it with furniture, which can clutter the room. Having one or two pieces of furniture that are the same color as the walls can also help them blend in better, which will make the room appear larger as well. Coffee tables made of glass, clear acrylic and mirror top reflect light rather than blocking it and can help increase the feeling of spaciousness.

Using sectional furniture or modular pieces can be a good way to squeeze more seating into a small living room. Bulky sofas and chairs take up a lot of space, while individual pieces can be configured to work with the room layout for a more natural fit.
