Our living rooms have also become much more multifunctional in recent years, with many of us now working from home and needing a home office.

By rethinking the layout and reworking the furniture arrangement, we’re going to show that it shouldn’t be that difficult to make the most of the potential of any compact living room.

One of the biggest challenges when it comes to placing furniture in a small space can be dealing with the television. Find the right place for the electronics so it doesn’t dominate the room.

“I always start with the main pieces of furniture — the sofa and the chairs,” says Lisa Mitchell, design director at Interior Style Studio. “My usual tantrum is designing a layout around the TV. I like to imagine how the furniture arrangement will best induce conversation, reading, or enjoying the view.”

Integrated storage is the solution according to Simon Tcherniak, senior designer at Neville Johnson. “Built-in TV storage units can be individually designed to meet storage needs and fit perfectly into the space needed,” he says.

“But the main benefit of opting for smart TV storage is that it maximizes space for larger items within the room, like sofas and coffee tables.”
