The film Barbiedirected by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is scheduled to premiere in 2023. But it was enough for Warner Bros to release some photos of the recordings for the live action become one of the most talked about topics on the internet and the trend of Barbiecore take over the fashion world.

Marked by the use of pink and by maximalism, the style inspired by the most famous doll in the world has been consolidated in recent months. “Without a doubt the parade [da coleção outono-inverno] of the Italian brand Valentino, together with the release of images from the film, boosted the dissemination of Barbiecore”, says Mariana Santiloni, manager of Client Services and trend specialist at WGSN, a company that is a benchmark in behavior and consumption analysis.

In the decor, shades of pink and maximalism also appear as high references. Proof of this are the works that bet on the color pink and were presented at the main design events in the world, as exemplified by Mariana: the upholstery chromodorepart of the collection created by designer Paola Lenti in collaboration with Estúdio Campana, and the armchair eyecandy signed by designer Amber Dewaele, both presented at Milan Design Week 2022, which took place in June.

“Pink also attracted attention at Maison & Objet, [que ocorreu] in March of this year, in a not so caricatured way”, recalls the specialist. In that same Barbiecore footprint, searches for “maximalist interior design” have grown by 5,000% in the last year, according to a WGSN survey.

But references to dollhouses in furniture and decor objects go beyond pink and maximalism. “Designers are creating furniture and decor accessories by applying glossy finishes to curved and wavy shapes with a retro feel,” says the trend expert.

Building a dollhouse is one of the first contacts with interior design for many people. In adult life, creating environments that refer to the toy can be a way of giving a playful and fun touch to the home, as well as getting in touch with the inner child and providing the feeling of security that childhood memories can bring.

But what explains the influence of Barbie, launched in the 1950s, in full 2022? “The emotional connection to the past gives strength to this trend. Nostalgia comes as a consequence of a feeling generated by the pandemic. In moments of uncertainty, it is a way to bring comfort and memories for simpler times”, explains Mariana. “The recovery of positivity is inseparable from this trend, which creates an expressive and fun aesthetic”, she defends.

Although this connection has intensified with the Barbiecore, the doll has been a reference for interior design for a long time. In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that the Barbie house never goes out of style in the decor universe. “Since she was launched, Barbie has been an icon for both fashion and decor,” says the WGSN expert.

Not by chance, many projects bring references from the various versions that the doll’s house has gained over the decades. Furniture designer Sophie Collé, for example, created the atmosphere of a dollhouse in her New York apartment. “According to her, it is a space where we feel safe and happy in a scary world”, comments Mariana.
