A colorful woman. She is full of stories, travel, energy. Why would the house be any different? Maria Gabriela Amaral and her husband Alam lived in an apartment in Salvador, Bahia, and over time, the desire to have the freedom that only a house with a backyard could offer arose. “We arrived at this one in 2014, further away from the city. All the other options didn’t need renovation, this one did”, laughs Maria (@mariaarquitetura), who is an architect and soon became enthusiastic about the jigsaw puzzle.

After changing the floor to a more bare floor and reducing the bathroom, they had a blank canvas in the 60 m²: smooth walls, it was time to start transferring their identity. Gradually, one of these walls gained bricks and became a large gallery.

“We really like to travel and bring items related to the house. We also really like art and when we meet new artists, we acquire works that make sense to us. So this wall was built, illuminated by rails”, she says, who believes in affective architecture. , punctuated by the stories of the residents.

There was another attraction for choosing the residence: the proximity to the beach. Positives and negatives are in this part, you know, after all, the sea air can deteriorate materials. “Because of this, the chairs are made of plastic and other choices were made to make everything very practical.”

If I want to wear flip-flops to the beach, I will. And on the way back, there’s no worry about getting the floor dirty. It’s a house to arrive barefoot, cross the room and wash your feet in the shower, a good place to live.”

The integrated kitchen had everything to do with the relaxed style of the couple, who like to have a few good friends, without being nervous.

“The size is great for two people. Bento, our son, came later and motivated us to do the last renovation, in the middle of the pandemic”, she says.

Although she is an architect and is used to making transformations with short deadlines, Maria believes that it takes time and immersion in stories for a house to reflect who the resident really is.

“My home reflects my cheerful and colorful personality. I’m reserved, but far from shy. Here I focus this urge to travel, see places, cook and try new things.”

  • Express who you are fearlessly. “The house has a lot to do with us. I visit many houses and I notice that people are always worried about showing who they are. Sometimes people accumulate a lot, but things that have nothing to do with them. At the same time, they are ashamed to value items that tell their story. These are the things that make our house ours.”
  • Color: soak. “You can’t be afraid of getting seasick. If it has to do with your personality, it’s worth mixing colors and thinking about which ones you like.”
  • reuse “Don’t despise what is old and that came from other houses. If you like this item, renovate, renew and reuse it. You have to be sensitive to value what you have.”
  • prints “You have to like it to have it at home. When you have a more sober personality, I advise you to go slowly. Here the floor is gray, we have a light wall, it had a neutral base, so the patterned sofa came in. When you have many different prints, more difficult to do this dosage. It is necessary to provide, but use patterns without fear.”
