While many people who buy an old house want to turn it into a “white box”, the model’s desire Bruna Tenório and her husband, the businessman and financial director Felipe Faria, aimed at the exact opposite. The couple’s dream was to have a historic residence in New York, USA, where they live, and preserve their architectural memory.

THE townhouse (detached house) from 1868 in Brooklyn’s charming Bed-Stuy historic district was a find. “The former owners bought it and did a major renovation of the structure, restoring the original wooden details. We were very lucky that they didn’t get rid of the historic part. A lot of people, oddly enough, destroy the whole ‘soul‘ [alma] the house”, says the model.

Stairs, fireplace and wooden floors, glass moldings and mosaics on the windows, crown molding on the ceilings, everything was maintained by the family. “For us, these are the most important works of art in our home. We are fans of the style mid century”, highlights Bruna.

Get to work

The four-story, 300 m² property was purchased in 2019, just before the pandemic, a time when, in addition to confinement and restrictions, Bruna discovered that she was expecting her first child, Gael, who is now 1 year old. “We spent the first six months of quarantine at home, painting, fixing and making improvements with our own hands. I found out I was pregnant in the meantime, it was crazy,” she recalls.

The couple took advantage of the time of isolation to print their tastes in the new home. “We did all the aesthetics ourselves. We wanted it to have 100% our DNA, for everything to be in line with our style and needs. So, we started buying little by little, researching, thinking… We wanted a place with the warmth and feeling of a real home. And I think we did it”, says Bruna.

To counteract the Victorian appearance of the house, which already has a lot of personality, they opted for a palette of neutral colors in the furniture, in addition to noble materials, such as wood and white marble. The touch “fun” was due to the colorful artwork made by street artists from São Paulo, which adorn the walls.

Outdoors

One of the few changes made to the property was the transformation of the ground floor into an apartment independent from the rest of the house, which the couple put up for rent. Due to the move, it was necessary to add a steel deck with stairs on the first floor and open a door instead of the kitchen window for the family to have access to the private garden, which is at street level.

The new outdoor space has a barbecue and is one of the family’s favorites, who love to receive friends. “We use the kitchen all the time. cooking is a hobby our. My husband is an expert in Italian food, and I make do with more practical preparations. In the summer, we spend a lot of time on the deck, where we have almost all our meals”, says Bruna.

Another corner where the family likes to stay is the child’s playroom. “We spent a large part of the day there. We were drawing, doing many ‘arts and crafts‘ as Gael loves playing with paint. Sometimes I turn on the sound and we dance all afternoon”, says the model.

With green and outdoor areas, the townhouse of the family bears little resemblance to hectic and frenetic New York. “We are very homely, a very quiet family. We love our neighborhood, we do everything on foot, around our house. We also love the fact that we live in NY and have so much space. Living in this house is a dream come true”, says Bruna.
